Windows 11 Update: Use Your Phone as a Webcam with Phone Link App
Windows 11 has brought a game-changing feature that allows users to utilize their Android phones as webcams through the Phone Link app. This feature has been highly anticipated and is now available for Windows Insiders across all Insider Channels.
Previously, Windows users had to rely on third-party apps to use their phone's camera as a webcam. However, with the Phone Link app, the process has become much simpler and more convenient. Apple introduced a similar feature called Continuity Camera, but Windows users can now enjoy the same functionality.
Before setting up the webcam capability, ensure that your phone is running Android 9 (Android Pie) OS or newer. Additionally, make sure to update the Link to Windows app on your phone to version 1.24012 or greater, as recommended by Microsoft.
To set up the webcam capability, follow these steps:
- Pair your Android phone with your PC using Phone Link and Link to Windows apps.
- Open the Settings app on your PC, navigate to Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices, and click or tap Manage devices.
- Get a Cross Device Experience Host update from the Microsoft Store.
- Once the update is complete, turn on the "Use as a connected camera" toggle in the My mobile devices section.
Now, you're all set to use your Android phone's front and rear cameras as a webcam for video meetings. One of the major advantages of this feature is the ability to switch between the front and back cameras from your phone, allowing you to capture what's in front of your computer and what's behind it. Additionally, you can pause the video stream and apply effects directly from your phone.
While Windows 11 has brought this innovative webcam solution, Google is also working on a similar feature for Android 14. However, Microsoft's solution has an edge as it is compatible with Android versions older than Android 14.
With this new update, Windows 11 continues to enhance the user experience by providing seamless integration between devices. Whether you're attending virtual meetings or recording videos, using your phone as a webcam adds versatility and convenience to your workflow.
